No one expected the Comets to rout the top-ranked Eagles on Friday when they met at Mercy Health Stadium. Avon is undefeated and tops the area’s Division 2 teams, already clinching a playoff spot (Springfield and Midview have also done so). After a 30-0 shutout loss, Amherst sits at 2-6 overall and 17th in the computer rankings under JFK and Freemont Ross, but still is ranked above Southwestern Conference rivals North Ridgeville, North Olmsted, and (still hunting for a win this season) Lakewood. An animated Steele High defense limited Avon scoring opportunities Friday, allowing a field goal early in the second quarter but then giving up two Eagles touchdowns before halftime. The Comets head to Westlake this week for an away conference game against the ninth-ranked Demons (5-3), who are coming off a 52-37 win over Ridgeville.
