Two second-half goals by the Demons were game-enders last Wednesday after the Comets battled to a 0-0 stalemate early on.
Darin O’Meara had six saves in the first half for Westlake and Ryan Rigsby had seven for Amherst. But by game’s end, the Comets wilted under a 16-9 shot disparity.
Twelve minutes into half number two, Westlake found the back of the net on a blistering shot by senior midfielder Bryce Sharak. Amherst pressed forward late in the game, looking for the equalizer, but Sharak put the game out of reach with 1:07 remaining on another quality finish inside the far post.
Rigsby was excellent in goal for the Comets and ended the match with 14 saves.
In the junior varsity game, Westlake held a long 1-0 lead until Amherst freshman Carter Hancock made a solo run with one minute remaining and finished far post to tie the score at 1-1. Freshman Ethan London assisted on the goal.
Goalkeeper Austin Becker — also a freshman — had five saves for the Comets, who outshot the Demons 15-11.
