The Sharpsville Blue Devil Invitational was the scene of some outstanding racing Saturday, as both the varsity and junior varsity girls cross country teams performed exceptionally well.
The site of the Pennsylania District X Championships, Sharpsville saw the Lady Comets varsity narrowly miss second place overall in the 48 team varsity race, with the Amherst junior varsity nearly recording a perfect score to win the Blue Devil JV race.
Quaker Valley won the varsity race with a low score of 53 points. The Comets finished just eight points behind second in recording 139 points, nearly 100 points fewer than they scored in this meet two years ago.
Amherst was led in Saturday’s race by Kalyn Potyrala, Cara Giannuzzi, and Alicia DelValle, who finished 19th, 20th, and 21st overall.
Sophomore Leah Johnson ran well also, covering the course in 20:38 to finish 33rd. Bridgette Wadge (53rd, 21:17) ran an outstanding race for Amherst, with fellow seniors Ashley Hill (54th, 21:19) and Rachel Szczodrowski (60th, 21:27) close behind.
The JV girls cross country team had an incredible race at Sharpsville. The Comets placed seven girls in the top 10 and five of the first six places overall. They totaled just 20 points to lead the 23 team field.
Antonia Monteleone, Emma Kelley, Victoria Bailey, Kayla Snowden, and Sydney Walker finished second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth to lead the Amherst JV. Juniors Camryn Leonard and Rachel Williams also finished in the top 10 for the Lady Comets, at eighth and ninth place. Kailey Reed (13th, 22:16) and Rachel Lasso (15th, 22:22) ran great races as well, with Lasso running a career best by over 30 seconds. They were followed by the top 30 finishes of Emily Johnston (22:41), Meredith Funderburg (22:44), and Sydnie Card (23:03).
Cassidy Hill (32nd, 23:25) was next for Amherst, with Courtney Cogdell (41st, 23:55), Hannah Gendics (51st, 24:28), Erin McGuire (52nd, 24:39, Robyn Ruffner (53rd, 24:51), Holly Eliopoulos (55th, 24:55), Karsen Bresnahan (56th, 24:59), Emily Syrowski (59th, 25:01), Rachel Veneman (60th, 25:07), Jenna Kovach (63rd, 25:18), Rain Wales (65th, 25:41), Arisa Inouye (74th, 26:11), Marissa Anaya (77th, 26:19), Hannah Borthwick (78th, 26:20), Allysin Garcia (79th, 26:20), Sophia Volak (90th, 27:16), Emily McGuire (91st, 27:18), Halle Brosky (116th, 30:09), and Hannah Banks (132nd, 39:22) also running for the Comets.
The girls now have a record of 137 wins and 55 losses. Their next race is in two weeks at the Medina Invitational. The varsity race is at 10 a.m. with the JV competing at 11 a.m.
