BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: Hill beats 513 runners on new regional course

Staff Report

Sophomore Josh Hill placed 12th out of 525 runners Saturday, running for the Comets at the intensely competitive Boardman Spartan Invitational.

His time of 16:35.5 was the best for Amherst’s boys cross country runners, who together placed 24th of 46 teams.

Following Hill in the varsity race to round out the top seven were junior Cameron Shawver (95th place, 17:54), sophomore Devin Baumgartner (137th place, 18:23), senior Scott Kelly (205th place, 19:10), junior Tyler Kovach (247th place, 19:37), junior Andrew Vontell (259th place, 19:47.3), and freshman Ethan Barnes (263rd place, 19:49).

Leading the open race was senior Matt Trame, who placed 127th with a time of 20:17. This time will earn him a varsity spot for the next meet on Saturday at Malone University.

The Boardman race was added this year to the Comets’ schedule because the OHSAA has made it the regional course for Amherst.
