The Comets are one step – ahem, one skate – closer to putting a varsity hockey team back on the ice.
Amherst athletic director Casey Wolf said the head hockey coach position has now been posted for external candidates to apply.
The ideal candidate will be about student growth first and have both expertise and a genuine love for hockey, Wolf said.
The coach does not have to be a teacher or employee of the Amherst Schools.
While conducting interviews, Wolf is also waiting for formal acceptance into the 36-team Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League.
He applied Jan. 21, giving board members projections for how many players are expected in the next four to five years. A vote is expected by the GCHSHL in mid-March.
Wolf said he is 99 percent confident Amherst will be admitted to the league based on comments by its president, but said, “It’s never a done deal until it’s a done deal.”
If successful, the Comets can put a team on the ice next winter. Wolf has already secured ice time at the Elyria North Park ice rink for practices and games.
