SWIMMING: Comets swim past competition for first place finish

Comets swimmers dominated Saturday at the Eagle Open with both the Amherst boys and girls taking first place overall.

The team competed against Bay, North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Elyria Catholic.

The girls squeezed out a first place win after beating the Bay and Olmsted Falls by five points and the boys swept their competition beating Bay by 84 points.

Amherst’s boys took first place in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 500-yard freestyle, and 100-yard backstroke. The girls finished at the top in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, and 400-yard freestyle relay.

The boys swim team was victorious last Tuesday over the Westlake Demons as the girls fell short to a win.

The Comets competed in 12 events and won all but the one-meter dive and 100-yard butterfly. The boys finished with 109 points and the Demons had 74.

Amherst took first place in the boys 400- and 200-yard freestyle relays and 200-yard medley relay.

Senior Matthew Pecze finished with a time of 5:25.93 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomores Adam Cook, Robby Beal, Jake Kiska, and Max Mlineck rounded out the first place finishes in breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, and individual medley.

Junior Olivia Walther led the Lady Comets with first place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles. The girls lost to Westlake 120-65.
