Fourteen experienced Comets wrestlers are returning this year and aiming to qualify at districts and states.
The Comets lost no seniors last season to graduation. Amherst state qualifier Todd Hastings is returning to lead the team.
“We’re looking for him to make it to states again and place in the top eight,” said seventh-year head coach Brian Cesear.
Sophomore Matt Lee was a district qualifier in 2014 and broke the school record for most pins with 24.
“I’m expecting Todd Hastings and Matt Lee to place in states,” Cesear said.
Nick Spataro, Alex Reyes, and Devin Rios are the three other Comets wrestlers he expects big results from this season. “I’m looking for them to step it up this year and take it to another level,” the coach said.
There are six other junior and sophomore wrestlers who Cesear hopes to have breakout years on the mat. The Comets have 29 players on the team.
“We’re much stronger in the upper and lower weights,” Cesear said. “I think we should have a pretty good season.”
Last season was a rebuilding time for the team and he’s seen results. His athletes are highly coachable and it shows. “If you give me athletes like that, we’ll get them ready to wrestle and ready to be successful,” Cesear said.
The Comets finished fifth last season in the Southwestern Conference, but Cesear said Amherst was just three points away from taking third.
“We were one match away from being in the top half,” he said. “I’m looking for some big things out of a lot of them.”
