Green and White basketball teams leap out to early wins

Three straight wins started the fifth grade Amherst Comettes Green team basketball season this weekend in the Amherst Tip-Off Classic.

They defeated Avon Gold 20-15 in the first game of the season. Jules Gedling led all scorers with 10 points while Ava Haddix added six and Alexis Alflen had four points.

In the second game, the Comettes defeated Avon Lake 14-9. Again Gedling led the way with six points while Jocelyn George added four points and Alflen with two points. Natalie Groom hit two free throws toward the end of the game to change the momentum.

The third game was close the entire way but the Comettes pulled out the late victory and beat the Bay Rockets 14-11.

In that contest, George played big with eight points while Isa Gotsis, Groom, and Haddix chipping in with two points each.

The Green Comettes secured a semifinal berth and play next on Sunday with a shot at winning the tournament.


The Amherst Comettes White team earned two victories at the Amherst Tip-Off Classic to start the season.

They defeated Berea 15-7 in the first game. Lindsey McConihe led all scorers with five points and Bella Simmons had four.

Emma Bruewer and Kristen Kelley also scored buckets. Savannah Fellenstein made two important free throws to put the game away late.

In the second game, White Comettes defeated the Avon Lakers 20-4. Simmons had six points and Kelley had four points.

Ava Darmos, Leah Biedenbach, Fellenstein, Bruewer, and McConihe contributed in the scoring column with two points apiece.

The Comettes have two wins in the tourney and continue pool play this weekend.
