The Comets led briefly Friday in Southwestern Conference play against the Avon Lake Shoremen.
Held scoreless in the first half — and building on a 36-yard field goal by Ryan Sturgeon — Amherst capitalized on a 35-yard romp to the end zone on an interception by senior Austin Salinas in the third quarter to take a 9-7 advantage over the Shoremen.
That was the last shining stand for the Comets.
Avon Lake’s Sam Klimkowski struck again by the end of the quarter for his second TD of the night, then the Shoremen pounded away in the fourth to make it a 26-9 final.
There were some bright spots as Amherst sank to 0-6 on the season.
Noah Jackson, Austin Stierhoff, and Matt Lee each registered a sack to knock Avon Lake back 28 yards. Todd Hastings racked up a team-high 10 tackles as the Comets defense hit 100 combined.
On the offensive, quarterback Nick DeJesus was held to 61 yards, completing just seven of 18 pass attempts. Cooper Cotterill ate up 53 yards on the ground but on 21 carries, averaging just 2.5 yards on each.
Reno Kruman continued to make a name for himself with four catches and 32 yards, followed by Alec Platz with a pair of catches for 24.
Now the Eagles are the team to beat as they visit Amherst at 7 p.m. Friday.
North Olmsted is 3-3 after a 44-21 loss this weekend to North Ridgeville in SWC action.
