Improvement was evident Saturday as the Comets boys cross country runners placed sixth of 11 teams at the Earlybird Invitational.
Amherst was led by senior captain Dane Johnson, who placed 22nd with a time of 18:20.
Freshmen Devin Baumgartner (24th place, 18:28) and Josh Hill (25th place, 18:30) were right behind. Dru Trifiletti finished next for the Comets (43rd place, 19:06) and Andrew Vontell was fifth for the team (58th place, 20:39).
Other finishers in the varsity race included Tyler Kovach (67th place, 20:44), Chase Beetler (63rd place, 21:05), Alex Reyes (76th place, 21:57), and freshman Ben Brogan (79th, 22:13).
Leading the open race was Brandon Fernandez with a personal best time of 20:33 and a 41st place finish. Scot Kelly was right behind him with a 20:34 and 43rd place finish.
Following these two were Pierce Barnes (63rd place, 21:05.2), Matt Trame (96th place, 21:48), and Alex Poalson who finished 204th with a time of 26:15.
The Comets will compete Saturday in the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival, the largest meet in the state.
