Caleb Stempowski scored twice and Ethan London put up a goal on the way to a 3-3 tie Saturday with Vermilion to end the varsity Comets’ regular season.
Amherst dominated the shot counter 23-15 but couldn’t overcome the Sailors press. Vermilion was able to come back from a 2-0 deficit to spoil what seemed like a sure thing.
The final put the Comets at 8-5-3 on the season.
That tally got a boost Oct. 10 from a 3-1 win over Westlake in the final Southwestern Conference match of the year.
Amherst got on the board first in the 33rd minute when junior Anthony LaRosa headed home a corner kick off the foot of fellow junior Ethan London. The goal was the defender’s fourth of the season, all coming off of corner kicks.
Four minutes later, senior Gavin Velazquez beat the Westlake sweeper and put the Comets up 2-0. Junior Carter Hancock assisted on the goal.
The Demons pulled one back less than two minutes later when a cross bounced around in the box and was poked into the back of the net by Sam Falcone.
Amherst controlled much of the play in the second half and Westlake struggled to get any good looks at the Comets goal. Senior co-captains Joey Yochheim and Ben Biedenbach anchored the center of the Amherst defense and kept Westlake to long, hopeful shots.
With 10 minutes remaining, Velazquez sealed the deal with his team leading 19th goal of the season, again assisted by Hancock.
