They were poised to seize a share of the Southwestern Conference crown for the first time in history.

But the Comets girls were denied that glory in a 1-0 loss to Westlake on Oct. 10 after Demons freshman Anna Williams put the winning goal past Amherst keeper Ainsley Steele.

The Amherst girls bounced back Saturday with a 3-1 victory at Willoughby South, where every player on the roster had a hand in the win.

Lexy Alston put the Comets on the board with her 15th goal of the season. A rocket off the foot of Jordyn Bena added to the tally and Katie Turner put the topper on from 20 yards out in the second half.

Rebels midfielder Delaney Matriano spoiled the shutout with a Willoughby goal.

The Comets girls wrapped the season with a 12-3-1 record (7-1-1 in the SWC).

They are seeded fourth in the postseason and will host the winner of Midview-Lorain at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 at Amherst Junior High School.
