Girls Soccer

• Credit where credit is due: Avon keeper Alaina Mihalek dogged Comets strikers for most of regulation, but Amherst’s Lexy Alston connected with Leah Drost for the winning goal with 22:45 remaining for a 1-0 Southwestern Conference victory.

The Eagles applied pressure but were shut down by Comets goalie Ainsley Steele.

• Lexy Alston broke the ice from 25 yards out and Elley Vorhees put two more in the back of the net as the Comets thoroughly dominated Elyria 3-0.

Nora Wright and Taylor Pogachar earned assists. The Comets recorded 62 shots in the monster of a game, with 34 on goal.

Ainsley Steele and Liv Fain shared keeper duties for Amherst in the shutout.

Boys Soccer

• Here’s the kind of shutout you don’t want to see — Amherst and Avon wore each other out for a 0-0 tie.

The Eagles outshot the Comets 18-13 and Amherst wrestled with fouls. Brandon Hazelgrove put in a standout performance with nine saves in goal for the Comets.

• A lopsided 6-1 victory over Sandusky came courtesy of a Gavin Velazquez hat trick and additional goals from Anthony LaRosa, Danny Vitelli, and Ben Biedenbach.

Assists were recorded by Bradley Kirsch (two), Joey Yochheim (two), Ethan London, and Alex Pennington.

The Comets outshot their opponents 22-8 and goalkeeper Brandon Hazelgrove had a save.

Max Corso scored the loan goal for the Blue Streaks.

Junior High Cross Country

• The Amherst Junior High Comets finished their season Saturday at a rainy Southwestern Conference championship meet.

Jeff Keiffer earned 2nd Team All-SWC with a 15th-place finish. Joseph Miller, Liam Taliano, Owen Davis, and Jeff Rangel also scored for the Comets. Ethan Howard had the biggest improvement of the day, dropping almost two minutes from his previous best time.

In the girls’ race, Catherine Turner and Aurora Wilson both earned 1st Team All-SWC honors. Catherine finished fourth and Aurora was eighth. Ella Baker, Natalie Raesler, and Jessie Boonekamp also scored. The girls placed fifth of 10 teams.
