Due to a barrage of setbacks including sickness, allergic reactions, and injuries, the Amherst boys cross country team was unable to show its true potential Saturday at the Southwestern Conference Preview, placing seventh out of 10 teams.
Leading the Comets was freshman Devin Baumgartner with an excellent time of 18:18 (18th place). This time is the 22nd fastest time ever run by a freshman in school history.
Up next were Dru Trifiletti (18:46 and 22nd place), Andrew Vontell (20:02 and 62nd place), Dane Johnson (20:09 and 67th place), Tyler Kovach (20:51 and 93rd place), Alex Reyes (21:26 and 101st place), and Ben Brogan rounded out the top seven with a 112th place and a time of 21:26.
Other finishers included Chase Beetler (21:28 and 113th place), Pierce Barnes (21:33 and 114th place), Matt Trame (21:55 and 129th place), Ben Yuhasz(22:34 and 149th place), and Alex Poalson with a time of 23:51 and 180th place.
Highlights included a 1:43 improvement by Tyler Kovach from the Amherst Running Festival 5K in July and Pierce Barnes showed an incredible 2:53 improvement from this meet last year.
The Comets are looking forward to a much-improved showing at the Earlybird Invitational starting at 9 a.m. this Saturday at LCCC.
