You could’ve blinked and missed a touchdown or two Friday at Amherst Steele, but the Comets (5-0) managed to escape the night with a 45-38 victory over Southwestern Conference rival Berea-Midpark (3-2).
Late in the fourth quarter, Steele linebacker Joey Tomaro tackled a Berea-Midpark ball carrier just inches short of the goal line to preserve the win.
The Comets rushing attack took center stage for the majority of the night, piling up nearly 400 yards on the backs of Khennedy Scagliozzo (235 yards on 33 carries) and Danny Makruski (127 yards on 12 carries).
Scagliozzo added a touchdown while fellow senior Makruski racked up three.
With Amherst leading 38-24 in the fourth quarter, Berea-Midpark tied the game with touchdown passes of 40 and 52 yards from quarterback Trevor Bycznski, who completed 30 of 52 throws for 548 yards and three scores.
Makruski helped the Comets respond quickly, breaking free for a 50-yard touchdown run that ended up being the game-winner.
Steele will travel to Olmsted Falls this Friday before returning home Oct. 5 to welcome Avon Lake.
