Boys Soccer

• Early goals by Drew Biedenbach and Bradley Kirsch put Amherst up 2-0 at the half, but St. Edward came back for a 4-0 win.

The Comets outshot the Eagles 17-12.

Girls Cross Country

• The Comets finished 14th in the Division 1-A race Saturday at the Tiffin Carnival, which is the second largest meet in the United States and contains almost nine hours of races over a variety of levels.

Leading the Amherst varsity was senior Kalyn Potyrala (29th, 20:12) followed by Cassidy Hill (48th, 20:59), Victoria Bailey (69th, 20:35), Kayla Snowden (105th, 21:42), Kaylee Haff (106th, 21:43), Marisa Del Valle (107th, 21:46), and Antonia Monteleone (129th, 22:40).

The Amherst junior varsity also competed in the open race at Tiffin. Freshman Leah Gerke (9th, 22:10) was the leader for Amherst, followed by Emily Hughes (57th, 23:40), Angelina Williams (90th, 24:12), Liah Miller (112th, 24:33), Marissa Anaya (125th, 24:45), Veronica Janosik (133th, 24:50), Courtney Cogdell (158th, 25:14), Alicyn Harris (172th, 25:24), Kyleigh Osko (158th, 25:29), Mariana Gilles (189th, 25:43), Hannah Farley (73th, 28:08), Noelle McNatt (314th, 28:13), Cassidy Cser (332th, 28:31), McKenna Kessler (339th, 28:53), Rain Wales (367th, 29:41), Erin McGuire (370th, 30:01), and Lauren Feakins (383th, 30:37).

The girls now have a record of 38-18.

Boys Cross Country

• Senior Josh Hill led the way for the Comets on Saturday at the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival, placing fourth in a pack of 220 runners.

Amherst placed 20th among 32 teams.

Following Hill were Matthew Kirsch (70th place, 17:19), Devin Baumgartner (138th, 17:53), Gabe DelValle (143rd, 18:20), Jacob Raesler (152nd, 18:25), Cael Walker (154th, 18:03), and Ethan Barnes (182nd, 18:21).

Leading the open race was sophomore Mario Benjamin with a third place finish out of 618 runners and a time of 18:02.

Rounding out the top seven open runners were Sebastian Pecora (29th place, 18:51), Isaac Davis (103rd, 19:51), Nick Glahn (120th, 20:05), Forest Hampton (162nd, 20:54), Seyveon Plaza (167th, 21:08), and Caleb Cabrera (170th, 21:10).

The open boys placed 13th out of 32 teams.

Freshman Zane DeMercurio was the most improved runner, besting his last race by 1:50.

AJHS Cross Country

• The Amherst Junior High School cross country teams competed at the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival on Saturday, and nearly every boy on the team ran his best time.

Jeff Keiffer, Joseph Miller, Owen Davis, Jeff Rangel, and Manny Trevino scored. Drew Pieschalski had the biggest improvement of the day and earned a varsity spot for the Avon Race to Remember.

The boys placed 29th of 37 teams.

Catherine Turner had a great race and finished fourth out of 258 runners. Aurora Wilson, Ella Baker, Natalie Raesler, and Jessie Boonekamp also scored for the girls. Hailey Counts and Ava Kelley had big improvements in the open race and earned varsity spots for the Race to Remember.

The girls placed 17th of 38 teams.
