The Comets boys’ first loss of the season was dished out Sept. 5 by Berea-Midpark in a battle between two of the top varsity soccer teams in the Southwestern Conference.
The Titans secured a 3-2 win, dropping the green and gold to 3-1-0 in the conference and 4-1-0 overall.
Amherst got on the board 15 minutes in when junior defender Anthony LaRosa headed home an Ethan London corner kick for his second goal of the season.
Berea-Midpark leveled the score at 1-1 with less than five minutes to play in the first half when senior Brandon Garibotti ended up one-on-one with Amherst goalkeeper Brandon Hazelgrove inside the box.
The second half pace slowed in the early going on the hot and humid night. With under 20 minutes to go, Titans senior Jacob Roberto gave his team the lead when he beat Hazelgrove near post with a left-footed shot.
With eight minutes to play, Garibotti scored again for the Titans when he tucked home a rebound off the hands of Hazelgrove.
The Comets fought back and less than a minute later senior Gavin Velazquez was fouled in the penalty box and fellow senior Ben Biedenbach buried the penalty kick to bring the Comets within one, but Amherst was unable to pull even.
