BOYS SOCCER: Big night for Simulcik, Comets

Dylan Simulcik scored his first varsity goal Aug. 9, putting the Comets boys on the path to a 4-1 victory over the Middies in varsity soccer action.

He pounced on a loose ball seven minutes in and powered it past Midview keeper Cole Thompson, who felt heat from 17 Amherst shots on goal in the first half.

Despite the barrage, Thompson managed to keep it 1-0 by halftime and put up some big saves as the Comets ramped up the pressure in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Then Amherst senior Gavin Velazquez opened the floodgates, beating his man around the corner to the endline and finding senior Ben Biedenbach, who finished calmly for a 2-0 lead.

Six minutes later, junior Carter Hancock beat multiple defenders on a short corner kick play and drilled one past Thompson for a 3-0 lead.

With under four minutes to play, Simulcik slotted a ball across for Velazquez, who slid to knock the ball in for a 4-0 lead.

Midview got one back when junior Damond Mathis lobbed a long shot that hit the crossbar and went off unlucky Amherst keeper Brandon Hazelgrove and into the net.

The Comets outshot the Middies 32-6 on the night.

With the win, Amherst moved to 4-0-0 and more importantly 3-0-0 in the conference to tie Avon for first place.

In the junior varsity match-up, Amherst won 2-0 behind goals from Alex Pennington and Jacksen Halfhill.

Kaiden Love chipped in with an assist and Kyle Dumais and Thomas Hall combined for the shutout in goal. The JV Comets outshot the Middies 21-4.
