Big plays put the Comets on the path to a 33-0 victory Friday against the Clearview Clippers in the high school football season opener. Quarterback Jimmy Schill, running back Khennedy Scagliozzo, tight end Nathan Soto, and wide receiver Danny Makruski each accounted for touchdowns that sparked Amherst to a double-digit shutout win. Schill hit Soto for a 10-yard touchdown pass halfway through the first quarter for the first TD of the evening. Early in the second quarter, Schill found Makruski, who sprinted 81 yards to the end zone to give Amherst a 14-0 lead. Scagliozzo scored two touchdowns from 65 yards and 31 yards in the second half, followed by a late 24-yard Schill-to-Fairchild connection with 1:45 remaining in the game. Even through two failed conversions and a debated fumble penalty, students and cheerleaders never went silent, cheering on the green-and-gold.
