Snowden, Sturgeon score in 2-2 tie

A late North Ridgeville goal led to a 2-2 tie Wednesday in Comets boys varsity soccer action at Amherst.

The Rangers struck first, 10 minutes into the first half, when Keegan Gawelek slotted the ball into the back of the net after a failed Amherst clearance.

Jacob Snowden finished a nice cross from fellow Comet Brandon Velasquez seven minutes later to even the tally at 1-1.

Amherst took the lead with 15 minutes to go in the second half when a Colin O’Connor cross found Ryan Sturgeon in front of goal for a tap-in from five yards out.

North Ridgeville tied it up with 11 minutes to go on a cross from Duke Crawford that was finished off by Austin Smith.

Comets coach Drew Biedenbach said it was a physical game that saw 29 total fouls (16 Amherst, 13 North Ridgeville).

Amherst’s junior varsity squad won 1-0 on a goal by Sean Coughlin with an assist from Devan Harmych.
