South Amherst man charged with sex crime in NY

A first-degree sexual abuse charge has been leveled against a South Amherst man by police in New York.

Andrew Nichols, 31, was arrested Aug. 15 by police in Watertown, near Lake Ontario.

A police report said he turned himself in to authorities, who had actually read him his rights June 2.

Nichols is accused of having sexual contact with a child age 11 or younger — a class D felony carrying a maximum sentence of seven years.

Investigators believe he had contact with a girl at a Watertown home in 2010.

At his arraignment, bail was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond. He has since been released.

Nichols works as a corrections officer, according to documents obtained by the News-Times.

Children services and Lorain County sheriff’s deputies have been involved in the investigation, sources said.
