Support was evident Monday for well-liked Nord Middle School teacher Todd Engle as the Amherst board of education granted him a year-long hiatus.
“He’s going through a rough time,” said board member Bob Kamnikar of Engle’s long fight with leukemia. “And he’s a great teacher… What he’s done for the kids is awesome.”
Engle, 31, often known to kids by his childhood nickname of “Bubba,” is a longtime physical education teacher for fifth- and sixth-graders at Nord.
Diagnosed in October 2013, he endured difficult and painful leukemia treatments until a bone marrow transplant last January. More than a year passed before Engle relapsed earlier this year.
