Morgan Bosworth, Rachel Kurucz, Dakoda Perkins, and Michaela Gayheart planted a tree Monday outside the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Elyria post. The magnolia was gifted to Girl Scouts Troop 50410 of Amherst by the Holden Arboretum in Willoughby. It took less than a minute for the cadettes to decide it should be dedicated to trooper Kenneth Velez, who was killed Sept. 15 during a traffic stop in Cuyahoga County. Velez’s son, Christian, is a sophomore at Amherst Steele High School and his older children, Devin and Andrea, are Steele graduates. In her youth, Andrea was a member of Troop 50410.
