How many cross country runners can fit in a Jeep? Leave it up to the Comets girls to cram 35 in Tuesday at the 4th Annual Jeep Jam!

Sliman’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram gave away more than $5,000 to Amherst Steele High School sports teams and competitive organizations. Each athletic and extracurricular group got $100 for taking part — top finishers in the hilariously fun competition also included track with 34 runners in a Jeep, cheerleading with 31, soccer teams with 29 and 27, swimmers with 28, and the Amherst Marching Comets with 27.

The 68-year-old Sliman’s dealership also used the night as a platform to help local charities, raffling off a Jeep Wrangler to support Lorain County Blue, which helps police officers who have been critically injured in the line of duty; and partnering with Power for Pink, a nonprofit helping those with breast cancer.

Organizers also asked the large crowd to support Issue 21, the Amherst Schools bond issue on the Nov. 8 ballot, which, if successful, will help pay for construction of a new elementary school to replace the aging Powers and Harris buildings.
