Rollover claims 69-year-old’s life

Staff Report

A Cleveland woman died Tuesday afternoon in a rollover crash on Rt. 2 in Amherst Township.

Corrine Sherrels, 69, was the passenger in a 2002 Ford Explorer that around 1:45 p.m. swung off the right side the westbound lane just west of the Middle Ridge Road exit.

When the SUV struck a ditch and overturned, she was thrown clear.

Sherrels later died of “incapacitating injuries” while at University Hospitals Amherst Medical Center, according to Lt. C.M. Smith of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

She had not been wearing a seat belt when the SUV crashed, he said.

The driver, 69-year-old Sally Thompson of Akron, was taken by ambulance to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain and then flown to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

Thompson, who had been wearing a seat belt, was listed in stable condition Tuesday night.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash, according to the OSHP.

The crash remains under investigation.
