Kathy Michaels reads “Maisy Goes to the Library” to kindergartners Wednesday in Stephanie Federer’s class at Powers Elementary where her grandchild is a student. The book tells the story of a young mouse who goes to the library to find a quiet place to read and learns it’s a place bustling with activity. Nine women from the Friends of the Amherst Public Library took 240 copies of the Lucy Cousins picture book to the school and every student got a free copy to take home. “For some kids, this will be the first book they own,” said principal Debbie Waller. This is the second year the Friends have given books to Powers children. The group also gives away books at St. Joseph School and Firelands.
