Police reports: String of car break-ins, Charger chase


• March 29, time undisclosed by police: A woman said she never received her green card in the mail. She showed police a tracking number saying it had been delivered but said the package never arrived.

• March 29 at 10:09 p.m.: Carl Baker, 41, of Amherst, was charged with felonious assault and domestic violence. Police said his wife was sent to the emergency room at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

• March 30 at 5:25 p.m.: A child was reported missing and was located two hours later.

• March 31 at 5:54 a.m.: Cash and change were reported stolen from a vehicle on Elyria Avenue.

• March 31 at 6:30 a.m.: A theft-from-vehicle victim described two suspects, both teenage boys on bikes. Loose change was taken from her car.

• March 31 at 6:39 a.m.: Loose change was reported stolen from an unlocked car on South Main Street.

• March 31 at 7:25 a.m.: While checking the Elyria Avenue area due to many car break-in reports, officers found two with driver-side doors ajar. Change was taken from both.

• March 31 at 7:33 a.m.: Two vehicles on Westchester Drive were entered and one was slashed with a utility knife found inside. The owner said he had home surveillance video footage of the incident.

• March 31 at 7:50 a.m.: More loose change was reported stolen from a vehicle on Westchester Drive.

• March 31 at 8:15 a.m.: Five packs of cigarettes and loose change were reported stolen from a car on Westchester Drive.

• March 31 at 8:27 a.m.: A Westchester homeowner provided police with surveillance footage of suspects in car break-ins. In checking the video, police discovered more victims and notified them of the issue.

• March 31 at 1:39 p.m.: A woman reported fraudulent credit card applications were made in her name.

• April 1 at 6:55 p.m.: Hearing sheriff’s deputies request Amherst police assistance in a car chase, Ptl. Christopher Alten responded. Deputies were in pursuit of a red Dodge Charger on Middle Ridge Road and then Rt. 58; when Alten arrived, the vehicle was stopped on East 48th Street and Toledo Avenue in Lorain. Leonard Smith, 30, of Lorain, was charged with fleeing, obstructing official business, and driving under suspension.

• April 1 at 8:45 p.m.: David Leatherwood, 24, of Lorain, was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and loud exhaust.

• April 2 at 1:25 a.m.: Police responded to a domestic disturbance complaint involving a 46-year-old man and 47-year-old woman, both of Amherst, arguing over the television remote control. They were separated for the night.

• April 2 at 1:28 p.m.: Jason Vargovich, 40, of Lorain, was arrested on a child support warrant through the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.

• April 2 at 7:15 p.m.: A man said he received a threatening letter from another man, mirroring similar incidents in the past.

• April 3 at 10:33 a.m.: Jordan Pendergrass, 26, of Lorain, was charged with no driver’s license, drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and reckless operation on private property.

• April 3 at 7:49 p.m.: A 42-year-old woman who attempted to kill herself was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with lacerations.

• April 4 at 11:26 a.m.: A belated theft complaint was made at Giant Eagle, Kresge Drive.

• April 4 at 12:12 p.m.: Kareen Ellis, 35, of Cleveland, was arrested on a bench warrant on original charges of driving under suspension and a headlight violation through the Amherst police.

• April 4 at 6:30 p.m.: A theft from a vehicle was reported on Edgewood Drive.
