Police reports: Overdoses, GMC on fire, stolen chainsaws

• Jan. 18 at 4:15 a.m.: A GMC pick-up truck went off the roadway on North Main Street and flipped on its side. Christopher Karkellie, 32, of Lorain, was charged with drunk driving, failure to control, and wanton disregard for public safety. Police noted Karkellie had run from Lorain police minutes earlier without his headlights on. He was also charged by the LPD.

• Jan. 18 at 2:23 p.m.: Two chain saws submitted for service at Milks Mower Sales, Cooper Foster Park Road, were determined to be stolen. The chainsaws were valued at $640 apiece.

• Jan. 18 at 3:20 p.m.: Demetrius Worthy, 26, of Lorain, was charged with driving without a license.

• Jan. 18 at 10:41 p.m.: Officers responded to an altercation between three men in the doorway of Cedar Pub on Park Avenue. A short time later, police were called back because one of the men had returned and “was starting problems,” according to a report. The suspect said his cousin had been assaulted and was trying to find the name of the man responsible.

• Jan. 19 at 7:38 p.m.: A 50-year-old heroin user was saved from a drug overdose on Westpointe Drive. He had stopped breathing. Life Care Ambulance workers arrived and gave the Amherst man a dose of naloxone to combat the overdose and within a short time he was breathing and speaking. He was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain for treatment.

• Jan. 21 at 5:21 p.m.: Edwin Lopez, 52, of Lorain, was arrested on a warrant for theft.

• Jan. 22 at 2:57 p.m.: A GMC Jimmy caught fire in the driveway to Pierre Foods on Cooper Foster Park Road. The driver said she was traveling down the street when a pedestrian flagged her down, yelling the car was smoking and on fire. The 30-year-old Lorain woman got out OK, but the car was fully engulfed in flames by the time Amherst firefighters arrived. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

• Jan. 22 at 3:30 p.m.: An 18-year-old Steele High School student texted his girlfriend, informing her he would kill himself. While officers were en route, the man took many pills and texted his last goodbyes to several people. He was given medical aid, then taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center for further treatment.

• Jan. 22 at 6 p.m.: Joshua Brinson, 25, of Lorain, was served with a warrant for failure to appear in court.

• Jan. 23 at 11:03 p.m.: A 24-year-old South Amherst man overdosed on heroin on Hamilton Street. He was given two doses of naloxone and taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center. Logan Reicholf was charged with drug abuse instruments.

• Jan. 23 at 11:38 p.m.: Louis Dingess Jr., 50, of Vermilion, was arrested on a contempt of court warrant for an original charge of dangerous drugs through the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office.

• Jan. 24 at 12:22 p.m.: Nicholas Hart, 22, of Amherst, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court on an original charge of drving under the influence.

• Jan. 26 at 7:26 a.m.: Michael Cieslak, 19, of Lorain, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court on an original charge of drunk driving.

• Jan. 26 at 3:29 p.m.: Jonathon Callahan, 28, of Avon, was charged with possession of drug abuse instruments. He was found in the parking lot of Wendy’s on Rt. 58 due to reports of a reckless operator.

• Jan. 27 at 4:30 p.m.: A woman reported her cell phone lost or stolen while at Target. It was found and returned to her.

• Jan. 27 at 4:45 p.m.: Brandon Garner, 22, of Lorain, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear in court on an original charge of driving under suspension.

• Jan. 28 at 12:26 a.m.: Sherri Bennett, 44, of Amherst, was charged with domestic violence.
