Rex Engle was chosen Monday to lead the Amherst board of education in 2016.

He took the reins from 2015 president Teresa Gilles.

Engle was also tapped to continue serving as the Amherst liaison to the Lorain County JVS board through 2019.

Marc Zappa was selected by his peers to serve the year in the capacity of vice president of the Amherst board.

The votes came during an organizational meeting of the school board at Steele High, the first of the year.

The composition of the board remains largely the same through the end of next year. There were two four-year terms up for grabs in November — those held by Engle and Zappa — but neither was contested.

Not so in the Firelands Schools, where Tom Meyers won a seat this fall. He was sworn in Monday at the Firelands board’s first meeting of 2016. Michael O’Keefe was reelected to his chair on the board.

Ben Gibson was chosen to serve as president of the board of education and O’Keefe was selected as vice president.
