Amherst man killed in Indiana crash

A three-car crash Friday killed Lucas Del Valle, 51, of Amherst, near Gary, Ind.

A pick-up truck hit Del Valle’s Ford Fusion head-on around 1:30 p.m. on the Indiana Toll Road. His wife and two daughters were hospitalized with minor injuries, according to police.

The deadly incident started when Indiana state trooper Anthony Potesta, 32, crossed several lanes of traffic while responding to a crash near I-65.

A truck driven by James Helmecy Jr., 30, of Portage, Ind., hit the squad car then ricocheted into westbound traffic where Del Valle was driving.

Del Valle died at the scene of blunt force trauma. Potesta and Helmecy were also injured in the crash and taken to a nearby hospital.

Del Valle was a 1981 graduate of Southview High School, Lorain.

His daughter, Emma, will be a senior at Steele High School this year, principal Michael May confirmed. It appears that she and 19-year-old sister Sophia, a Steele graduate, were riding with their father.

Friends took to Del Valle’s Facebook page over the weekend to offer words of mourning.

“There’s a special welcome party in heaven for a new angel and Lorain Southview Saint… Lucas DelValle,” wrote Wally Berlingeri. “Can’t stop thinking about you. Life well lived, my friend. Your light will continue to shine in all you encountered.”

“Very sad day. He was a good friend, what a great loss. I feel bad, his family is beautiful. My prayers are with them,” wrote Marrero Stanley.
