John and Cathy Sekletar have been awarded the Amherst Garden Club’s Awesome Garden Award for the month of September.

Forty-one years ago, they bought the house at 378 Long St. and since have raised two boys, entertained many friends, and created a beautiful garden oasis for relaxing and entertaining.

Almost all the renovations and upgrades they made through the years became a reality because of their own ingenuity and elbow grease. They built a back deck, laid stone walkways, added lush shade plants and ornamental trees, and created walking paths through the greenery.

This year’s project was a pergola that John built at the foot of a koi pond that is the focal point of the home’s garden, covered with water hyacinths.

The Sekletars and the other 2018 award winners will be honored as a group at the garden club’ Oct. 4 meeting.
