A blue stripe on black was raised Friday to fly over Mercy Health stadium in memory of Kenneth Velez, who loved and supported Comets football — and who, as an Ohio State High Patrol trooper, lost his life in the line of duty in September 2016. A ceremony honoring his sacrifice, and that of all fallen officers, was observed prior to kickoff as Amherst prepared to take on Lakewood at home. The late trooper’s son, Christian Velez, a senior, plays for the Comets and helped lead Amherst to a 56-0 victory. Christian’s name and those of siblings Andria (Class of 2013) and Devin (Class of 2011) are inscribed on a monument dedicated near the Comets fieldhouse. The memorial was built using donated funds; freshman football assistant coach Mike Biro said he hopes that when people see it the American flag in the colors of the Thin Blue Line flying high they will appreciate what officers do each and every day.
