Police talk man out of suicide attempt

Staff Report

A 54-year-old Amherst man was coaxed from his home by police Sunday evening after threatening to kill himself.

His wife and 11-year-old son retreated to a neighbor’s home on Northwood Court around 6 p.m., after the man took a gun to his basement, according to a report by police Sgt. Jacob Perez.

The wife told a 911 dispatcher that her husband cocked a long gun and told her, “I’m not going to be here anymore.”

Perez called the man by phone and talked him out of the house unarmed.

The man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center for evaluation.

The gun was taken by police for safekeeping and tagged as evidence.
