Amherst upset Southwestern Conference champion Westlake by a single point Saturday to finish second in the Northeast Ohio girls cross country district meet at Lorain County Community College.
The Comets placed four girls in the top 20 to best the Demons 76-75 after an initial protest had placed Amherst third overall.
Senior Alicia Del Valle’s fourth place finish led the Comets’ attack, with sophomore Victoria Bailey earning eighth place to also finish in the top 10 for Amherst.
Junior Antonia Monteleone (19th place) and freshman Kaylee Haff (20th place) had two of their best races ever to finish in the top 20. Kalyn Potyrala (24th place) was the Comets’ number five runner for the day, and was followed by fellow juniors Leah Johnson (28th pace) and Kayla Snowden (43rd place).
Amherst is going as a team to the regional championships for the 13th year in a row, and for the 28th time in the last 29 years.
The Northeast Ohio Regional Championships will be held at Boardman High School in Youngstown, with the Comets set to run in the Girls Division 1 race.
The top seven teams and the top 24 individuals advance to the state championships in Columbus.
