The Amherst Comets’ bid to repeat as district champions came up just short last Thursday as they fell 2-1 to the Avon Eagles at the Pipe Yard in Lorain. A sacrifice fly by Avon’s Tommy Kocar scored Neil Strodtback in the fourth inning for the game’s first run. Avon took a 2-0 lead in the fifth before the Comets got on the board in the sixth through a bunt single by Ryan Glowacki, a pair of walks, and a sacrifice fly from Jeremy Smith. A 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, though, spelled the end to Amherst’s season and a 23-6 final record for the Comets.
