Tradition is a powerful thing, and the Amherst girls cross country team used that to its advantage Saturday, finishing third in the district meet at Lorain County Community College.
The Lady Comets qualified as a team to this weekend’s regional championships for the 12th straight year, and for the 28th time in the last 29 years.
Leah Johnson was the first finisher for Amherst at the unusually windy district meet, placing 10th overall in 20:02.
Junior Alicia DelValle finished 16th for the Comets (20:26), with Kalyn Potyrala (25th, 20:45) and Cara Giannuzzi (28th, 20:55) finishing third and fourth for Amherst. Senior Ashley Hill (34th, 21:10) ran a superior race to finish fifth for the girls, with Victoria Bailey (38th, 21:16) and Bridgette Wadge (58th, 21:58) completing the varsity for the district finals.
The team record now stands at 177 wins and 62 losses.
The Comets’ third place finish allows the girls to advance as a team to Saturday’s regional meet at Boardman High School in Youngstown. The girls Division 1 race will run at 3 p.m.
