The Lady Comets finished third Saturday at the Southwestern Conference cross country championships at Lorain County Community College.
Berea-Midpark upset defending conference champion Avon 33-51 to lead the 10-team field. Amherst scored 66 points, well ahead of fourth place Avon Lake’s 129 points.
The varsity Comets were led by the All-SWC performances of four athletes. Sophomore Kalyn Potyrala finished eighth (19:53), followed by Leah Johnson (ninth, 20:04), Cara Giannuzzi (14th, 20:25), and Alicia DelValle (15th, 20:31).
Freshman Victoria Bailey ran a superb race to finish as the Comets’ number five runner, using a career personal record of 21:02 to propel her to a 20th place finish. Seniors Bridgette Wadge (23rd, 21:17) and Ashley Hill (29, 21:28) had great races for the Comets as well, both finishing in the top 30 of the 70-girl field.
The girls junior varsity team had a superior showing at the championships, winning the conference JV title 29-35 over defending champion Avon.
Sophomore Antonia Monteleone finished second, followed by the top 10 finishes of Rachel Szczodrowski (fourth, 21:46), Kailey Reed (sixth, 22:08), Sydney Walker (eighth, 22:08), Rachel Williams (nineth, 22:16), and Camryn Leonard (10th, 22:17).
In their final race of the season, the JV Comets also had performances from Rachel Lasso (15th, 22:24), Kayla Snowden (19th, 22:39), Meredith Funderburg (21st, 22:49), Emily Johnston (26th,23:09), Emma Kelley (29th, 23:13), Cassidy Hill (41st, 23:53), Marissa Anaya (47th, 24:06), Emily Syrowski (55th, 24:28), Sophia Volak (56th, 24:29), Hannah Gendics (70th, 25:02), Jenna Kovach (74th, 25:12), Holly Eliopoulos (75th, 25:13), Courtney Cogdell (85th, 25:37), Molly Parker (86th, 25:39), Robyn Ruffner (88th, 25:46), Allysin Garcia (92nd, 25:57), Arisa Inouye (93rd, 25:59), Karsen Bresnahan (95th, 26:06), Rain Wales (96th, 26:07), Erin McGuire (97th, 26:08), Rachel Veneman (102nd, 26:23), Hannah Borthwick (112th, 26:55), Hannah Hauck (136th, 27:51), Halle Brosky (165th, 31:17), and Emily McGuire (170th, 34:35).
The Comets’ record is now 163 wins and 60 losses.
The varsity girls begin their tournament journey with the district championships this Saturday at LCCC. The Division 1 race will begin at 3:45 p.m.
