Junior Ryan Rigsby and freshman Stephen Jones had a goalkeeper showdown Wednesday, with a combined 20 saves as the Comets and Shoremen met in a Southwestern Conference soccer match-up.
Senior Jacob Snowden put Amherst on the board first with 4:50 in the first half while Rigsby protected the Amherst net with seven stops, as Avon Lake fired in 11 shots.
Midway through the second half, Shoremen junior Charlie Yungvirt evened the score, popping the ball over the oncoming Rigsby.
Amherst outshot their opponents 10-5 in the second half but Jones was on point — he came up with a huge save with five seconds on the clock to prevent a Comets win.
In junior varsity action, both teams entered undefeated in conference play but also drew to a 1-1 tie.
Matthew Naelitz headed home a corner kick from Jacob Rakar to put the Comets up 1-0. Junior Nick Daggett equalized for the Shoremen before the half ended.
Freshman goalkeeper Austin Becker had seven saves for Amherst. Dino Pietromica had three for the Shoremen.
