The Amherst Junior High cross country team competed Saturday in the Early Bird Invitational and many of the Comets runners showed big improvements.
Eighth-grader Cael Walker led the boys and finished 26th of 356 runners.
Jacob Raesler, Brent Baumgartner, Lucas Johnson, and Sebastian Pecora also scored for the Comets.
Mario Benjamin had the biggest improvement for the boys, dropping 55 seconds from his previous time and earning a varsity spot for this weekend’s Tiffin Cross Country Carnival. Riley Torkelson also earned a varsity spot.
The boys placed 10th of 23 teams.
Kaylee Haff again led the girls, improving 26 seconds and finishing 24th of 304 runners.
She was followed by scorers Alanna Woodworth, Emily Hughes, Marisa DelValle, and Bri Waldecki.
Helen Lewis had the biggest improvement of the day, running more than two minutes faster than last week and earning a varsity spot along with Jordyn Bena.
The girls placed 10th of 20 teams.
