A magical tourney run ended abruptly this weekend with a sound defeat for Amherst’s fifth grade Lil Lady Comettes White basketball team.
The girls racked up a 20-5 season record on the way to the championship game versus Olmsted Falls, where the Lady Bulldogs dished out a 34-6 loss to become back-to-back Lake Erie League champions.
Kristen Kelly scored four points and Bella Simmons added a bucket for the Comettes. The girls are proud of their second place medals and LEBL trophy.
The championship run came with tournament wins over Brecksville and Midview.
The Amherst girls avenged two earlier season losses by stunning Brecksville 15-13. A Bees three-pointer went in after the buzzer sounded to give the Comettes a victory.
After a first round bye, the Comettes defeated the Middies 17-16 in dramatic fashion, coming from behind.
Amherst trailed for 35:20 of 36 minutes, including being down by 10 points in the second half, then rallied to victory with a swarm full-court pressure defense.
The game turned with 40 seconds left to play, and the Comettes trailing by one point. Off of a steal, Simmons passed to Lindsey McConihe, who hit a 10-footer on the wing to seal the win.
