Coming off their first win of the season and a long holiday break, Amherst looked solid in the first quarter Saturday against the Clearview Clippers. On the non-conference action on the road, the Comets jumped out to a tenuous four-point lead (21-17) at the end of the period. But no one expected the 13-point Clippers run that started the second quarter. When Clearview’s Lance Billings stole the ball to sprint in for a layup, it put the Clippers on top and changed the tide of the game. The teams played in lockstep for the rest and Amherst never found the lead again in the 82-72 loss, trailing by nine heading into the second half and again as the fourth quarter began. The Junior Varsity Comets also slipped 68-50 to the Clippers earlier in the day but the freshmen found a resounding 50-22 victory.
