BOYS SOCCER: Overtime loss closes out Comets’ season

Staff Report

A tough 2-1 overtime loss Wednesday to Avon Lake drew the Comets boys soccer season to an end.

The two teams were scoreless at the end of the first half with Amherst having a 6-3 edge on shots. Brandon Velasquez came close to putting the Comets up 1-0 on a breakaway only to be denied by the Avon Lake keeper.

The Comets out-shot the Shoremen again in the second half and were rewarded with a goal with 17 minutes to play.

Michael Rakar won the ball and found Velasquez, who put Ryan Sturgeon in on goal with a nice through ball. Sturgeon’s shot was saved but Colin O’Connor was in front of goal to put home the rebound off the Avon Lake goalkeeper.

The Shoremen were able to equalize with less than five minutes to play in regulation when they put home a bouncing ball in front of the Amherst goal.

Avon Lake’s Ricky Krause then scored on a nice individual effort early into the first overtime period for the win.
