Allen Matakovich’s second quarter kick through the uprights — a 30-yarder — gave the Comets their sole points Friday in a struggle with the now 7-1 Avon Eagles.
The game ended at 45-3 on a cold, wet Avon field. It was a first-half runaway for the Eagles, who went into the locker room up 24-3 at the half and emerged to tag on a trio of touchdowns before the night was over.
Nick DeJesus has a mixed night in the pocket for Amherst. He averaged 18 yards on each of five completions but couldn’t find a receiver on 12 others.
Reno Kruman (44 yards receiving) and Alec Platz (47 yards receiving) ate up the turf on those few big pass plays.
Cooper Cotterill continued to lead the Comets on the ground with 64 yards versus the Eagles. Adam Haas picked up another 15 and DeJesus also picked up 21 yards scrambling.
Notably missing was Comets pressure against the Avon offense. Friday found no sacks by the Todd Hastings-led Amherst defensive line.
This week, the 0-8 Comets are on the hunt for their first win of the season as they take on the 1-7 Westlake Demons.
That game starts at 7 p.m. at Steele High, the last of the season at home.
