The Lady Comets cross country team had a strong showing Friday at the Chet Sullwold Invitational with a fourth place finish.
“We saw the three best teams in the west end of our regional. All three will be ranked this week,” said head coach Terry Kemp. “A 38-second spread for our varsity is outstanding.”
The Comets were led by freshman Leah Johnson, taking 18th place overall with a time of 20:24, and junior Cara Giannuzzi, who finished 21st.
“The race was a fast and smooth course,” Johnson said. “It was very open spaced. I felt strong and paced my miles.”
The invitational allowed each team to enter up to 10 runners in the varsity race, unlike most, which only allow seven.
Amherst’s varsity lineup for the meet included Johnson, Giannuzzi, Ashley Hill, Kalyn Potyrala, Ally Potyrala, Alana Moore, Bridgette Wadge, Antonia Monteleone, and Megan Parker.
In the junior varsity race, the girls took second overall with seven girls finishing in the top 15. The JV team included Rachel Szczodrowski, Sydney Walker, Ashley Cogdell, Kayla Snowden, Heather Wigton, Sydnie Card, and Meredith Funderburg.
Szczodrowski was voted runner of the week by the team for her second place finish in the JV race and first sub-22:00 performance of the season.
“I was honored to be selected by my teammates and I’m happy that I was able to help the JV come in second place,” Szczodrowski said.
The varsity Comets will travel Oct. 3 to Michigan to race in the Running Fit Coaching Legends Invitational and the JV team will race at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 3 at the Vermilion Invitational.
