Staff Report

Goals from Shoremen Ricky Rouse and Charlie Yungvirt downed the Comets varsity boys Wednesday by a 2-1 final score.

Rouse struck just 15 minutes in, finding the net from 20 yards out, giving Avon Lake a 1-0 halftime lead. His team also outshot Amherst 5-1 in the half.

Avon Lake capitalized on a bouncing ball over the middle of the Amherst defense to go up 2-0 early in the second half on a goal from Yungvirt.

Amherst picked up the pace after the goal and outshot Avon Lake 8-5 in the second half.

Fifteen minutes in, Colin O’Connor let a shot rip from 30 yards and Allen Matakovich pounced on the rebound for his first goal of the year.

The Comets were very close to tying the game minutes later when Ryan Sturgeon’s cross found O’Connor open in the middle of the box, only to be denied by an excellent save from Shoreman senior goalkeeper Jacob Walasinski.

JUNIOR VARSITY: Amherst defeated Avon Lake 1-0, thanks to a goal by Sean Coughlin with an assist by Chad Cecil.

Amherst goalkeepers Xavier Potts and Brandon Hazelgrove combined for the shutout.
