Personal bests were recorded Saturday by every Amherst boys runner at the Tiffin Cross Country Carnival.
The varsity Comets entered the 1A race against the best runners in the state. They placed 38 out of 45 teams.
Leading the pack was senior Dane Johnson with 126th place and a time of 17:32.
He was followed by two freshmen, Devin Baumgartner (17:36 and 140th place) and Josh Hill (17:58 and 183rd place). These are fantastic times for freshman and land them spots in the top 20 times ever run by a freshman at Steele High.
Rounding out the top five were Dru Trifiletti (18:13 and 211th place) and Andrew Vontell (19:24 and 281st place). Brandon Fernandez (19:50 and 288th place) and Scott Kelley (19:57 and 290th place) also competed in the varsity race.
The open race was led by sophomore Tyler Kovach, who ran a 19:54 and placed 160th. He was followed by Matt Trame (20:08 and 184th place), Pierce Barnes (20:22 and 212th place), Ben Brogan (20:32 and 237th place), Alex Reyes (20:53 and 285th place), Dylan Beam (21:17 and 351st place), Ben Yuhasz (21:18 and 352nd place), and Alex Poalson with a time of 23:08 and a 534th place finish.
The boys will take this weekend off from competition and compete Sept. 26 at the Cloverleaf Invitational in Lodi.
