More money was donated this past year than needed to buy lights for Amherst’s downtown murals honoring veterans.
Lights have been purchased and installed to illuminate the work of local artist Mike Sekletar on Park Avenue. The building-high images pay tribute to those who fought in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, with a fourth mural in the works in homage to Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
Now Main Street Amherst, which handled donations as fiscal agent for the Amherst Veterans’ Mural Committee, intends to turn over unused funds to the committee on Nov. 1.
First, federal law requires Main Street to offer to return unused funds to contributors. If you gave to the cause and would like a refund, submit a written request to Main Street Amherst and provide documentation showing how much you donated.
Refund requests are due on or before Oct. 25.
Unclaimed funds will be used for creation of a new mural and ongoing maintenance of the art works, according to Main Street director Teresa Gilles.
