Volunteer painters spruce up Amherst’s Maude Neiding Park

Maude Neiding Park’s wooden play area was given a fresh coat of paint Aug. 30.

Seventeen helpers used 40 gallons of paint to refurbish the entire structure, a process that took about four hours. The painting was organized through community service initiatives at Sherwin Williams Paint.

“People just walked up and lent a hand,” said Christina Folmer, a property management specialist at Sherwin Williams who led the activity. “It was starting to look a little worn down and needed to be brightened up. It was a nice, early start and everyone brought their energy.”

Amherst park board commissioner Dave Andrews said it had been about 10 years since the play area was last painted.

What would have been an $1,100 bill for supplies was cut in half by Sherwin Williams. Store managers provided lunch.

“It’s pretty great. This really helps out a lot,” Andrews said.

“We put it out on Facebook and got a good response from that. One of the (city) council members put it out to her constituents too and got a great response.”

Bright colors were added to roofs on the 20-year-old structure last year.
