Amherst police officer Devin Small was promoted to sergeant in a Monday ceremony at the North Lake Street station. A patrolman of 16 years, he became a police officer after a career at the Ford Assembly Plant. Lt. Mark Cawthon said Small will supervise a platoon of six road officers. He steps into the role formerly held by Sgt. Troy Donaldson, who retired. Small has recently worked in the Amherst detective bureau. Other police promotions are expected soon, including a part-time officer moving into Small’s old full-time patrolman job and a hire to fill the shoes of former Det. John Balog, who retired this spring.
