Amherst police Lt. Mark Cawthon has been given the 2017 Outstanding Contributor Award by the Lorain County Safe Community Coalition.

The organization gives the award each year to a member who displays dedication to traffic safety. Spokesperson Kat Evers Solove, also a health education specialist at the Lorain County General Health District, said Cawthon has gone above and beyond the call of duty to increase residents’ safety.

During the Buckle Up Bowl competition, he assisted the Amherst Steele High School student council in talking about how buckling up can save your life. He also worked with RC’s Brewhouse in Amherst to display taxi service information and offer a “designated driver drink” on St. Patrick’s Day. Cawthon participated in the Buckle Up for Burgers initiative by awarding a McDonald’s coupon to drive-through customers wearing safety belts.

For information on seat belt use, impaired driving, and motorcycle safety, contact the health district at 440-322-6367 or visit www.loraincountyhealth.com.
